British summer (if we can call it that!) is well underway, so it is likely that you may have noticed some unwelcome guests!

If we look at our crawling ‘friends’, we can include ants, bed bugs, cockroaches, fleas, silverfish and beetles.

Ants are a perennial problem! If you regularly see ants in and around your property, you can probably assume there is a nest there somewhere. The key is to first find the nest entrances. These are indicated by small piles of earth pellets or can be located by watching the ants moving back and forth from nest to food.

Once located, there are products you can buy from the supermarket but, to be honest, the ones that work best are just temporary solutions – it’s always best to call in the experts for a long-term solution!

Moving on to bedbugs – they can multiply VERY quickly, so early detection is critical to help prevent an even larger infestation.

Remember - A bed bug infestation has nothing to do with cleanliness

They can hide in unusual places such as behind baseboards, floor cracks, and under carpets or behind loose wallpaper, which can make them difficult to detect and, once indoors, they can be extremely difficult to control without the help of an experienced pest specialist.

Control of cockroaches is seldom easy because of the difficulty of getting the insecticide to the insect.

The British Pest Control Association (BPCA) has this advice for control of cockroaches:

“For any Cockroach infestation, we would always recommend contacting a professional pest control company, preferably a member of the BPCA. They are trained in cockroach control and will have access to a range of professional use insecticides that are not available to the public.

Next up is fleas and you need look no further than your pet dog or cat for the first signs of flea infestation! Constant scratching is, obviously, a key sign of fleas, as is visible signs when combing your pet (signs of fleas moving or visible droppings).

Another obvious sign is being bitten yourself and, if you have an active infestation, you may see fleas jumping in your carpet and furniture.

As with ants, there are things you can but over the counter but it will only offer a short-term solution. Our best advice is to:

a) approach a vet for a cure to your pet’s issues

b) use a professional pest control service to administer any treatments in your property.

Silverfish are a curious problem for households… found in damp areas commonly in kitchens and bathrooms and nocturnal in habit. They often get trapped in baths and basins, as they cannot climb smooth surfaces.

As they love dampness, always treat areas with an appropriate insecticide or call us and we’ll sort it for you.

Lastly, on crawling insects, we have beetles – there are at least 10 types of beetle in the UK, from biscuit to carpet and longhorn to woodworm.

As there are so many types, the best advice is to get the experts in to assess the problem and advise the most appropriate course of action.
